Homeless man hit a policeman

A MAN who was sleeping rough in Scarborough hit a policeman after he was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

David Anthony Wilkinson, 33, appeared at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday and admitted assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty.

The defendant, who appeared in custody, was found asleep in a shelter in Birdcage Walk at 11.30am on Tuesday.

Officers realised that a warrant was out for Wilkinson’s arrest after he failed to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on a drunk and disorderly charge.

The court heard that when officers tried to arrest the defendant, he swore at them and said “I’m not going anywhere”. They lifted him up – still in his sleeping bag – and put him in the back of a police van.

On arrival at Scarborough police station he hit one of the officers in the chest with a clenched fist.

Shaun Greenan, mitigating, said his client struck out as he did not fully understand why he had been arrested. He was sentenced to one day in custody and taken directly to Leeds Magistrates’ Court.
