LIP gloss worth less than £2 cost a Scarborough woman £150.

Emma Crawford, 21, of Prospect Road, admitted to stealing the item from Wilkinsons in the Balmoral Centre on September 30.

Magistrates told her to pay costs of £85, a £50 fine and a £15 victim surcharge - meaning she will pay more than 75 times the original £1.98 value of the lip gloss.

Katy Varlow, prosecuting, said: “She had bought other items but took the decision to drop the lip gloss into her handbag.

“If she did not have previous convictions this would not have made it to court, but she has been out of trouble for a considerable period of time.”

Crawford, who was not represented at the hearing, said: “It was a stupid mistake. I’m sorry and I didn’t mean to do it.”

Magistrates accepted her offer to pay off the debt at a rate of £20 per fortnight.
