A four hour armed standoff in Scarborough’s Blenheim Terrace ended with a man in custody on Thursday night.

Police were called to the road at around 7pm after a man was seen threatening some teenagers with a sword before locking himself in a nearby flat.

Armed officers were forced to go door to door in the building before finding the man, believed to be the landlord of the property.

One witness said: “The sword was massive, it was like a samurai sword, he looked really angry.”

He was taken away in an ambulance as a precaution but is not believed to have suffered any injuries in the standoff.

A police spokesman thanked the public for their understanding during the incident.

He added that a 43-year-old local man will be questioned on suspicion of affray and possessing an offensive weapon.
