A man has been rushed to hospital with what police say are serious injuries, after a car caught fire following a four-vehicle crash near Scaling Dam.

Police, ambulance and fire crews raced to the crash on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road, which was closed while police investigated the incident.

North Yorkshire Police say one man was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries, while paramedics treated others at the scene.

The crash happened just past the Lythe turn-off towards Scaling Dam at about 5.15pm on New Year’s Eve.

Witnesses to the collision or anyone with information that could assist the investigation, are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option one, and speak to the force control rfoom.
