OPERATIONAL police officers and PCSOs in Scarborough have been issued with new shirts.

The previous uniform of white shirt and black tie has now been replaced by moisture control shirts in black and blue colours for police officers and PCSOs respectively, which have been designed to be more practical in meeting the demanding role they have.

They have been introduced as part of a wider review of uniform to improve performance and bring substantial savings as part of procurement initiative by forces in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

This has resulted in an overall reduction in the cost of equipping a patrol officer in North Yorkshire from £699 to £498.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Iain Spittal, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “The new shirts have been selected with officers’ and PCSOs’ comfort and effectiveness in mind, not to mention cost-efficiency.

“The roles of police officers and PCSOs can be very demanding and often physically strenuous, so it is vital that our operational staff have a uniform that is fit for purpose.”
