A disabled man claims his pervert doppelgänger has made his life a living hell.

Scarborough’s Mike Chapman has been heckled and abused driving his electric wheelchair after people mistook him for paedophile Robert Newman.

Wheelchair-bound Newman was last week spared prison for downloading sick child porn over the ‘dark web’.

But the high-profile case, in which Newman became the first Briton tried outdoors, has left Mr Chapman scared to leave his Victoria Road home due to their unfortunate
resemblance.

“People keep shouting ‘Oh there’s that paedophile’ when I’m out in my wheelchair,” said the 54-year-old former church worker.

“Unfortunately, we have the same build, and even the same glasses, but the difference is I don’t have any police convictions and I’m not a paedophile.

“It’s only really me and him that have these wheelchairs in Scarborough, everyone else has scooters so that doesn’t help.

“Even my mates say I look like him.”

The abuse begun after Newman’s first appearance at York Crown Court, when proceedings were moved outside after the 47-year-old failed to get up the court steps.

The case resulted in “troubled” Newman receiving a three-year community order.

Police found over 1,000 vile images on Newman’s laptop and hard drives; his look-a-like said he abhors his Newman’s crimes.

And after being on the receiving again at what he calls “sick” abuse, Mr Chapman has pleaded for the public to take a second look before they hurl insults.

“It’s making my life hell.”
