A THIEF with a penchant for sweet perfume caused a bad smell for a Scarborough store after being caught in the act.

Jaime Winter, of no fixed abode, was stopped by shop detectives after taking a bottle of Chanel perfume from Debenhams.

The court heard Winter, 33, walked into the store, in the Brunswick Centre, before putting the £86 bottle in her handbag.

Prosecuting, Katie Varlow said the situation was made worse after Winter could not provide officers with details of her address following a fall-out with her mother.

As a result of the complication, she was ordered to spend a night in the cells.

Mitigating, Shaun Greenan, told Scarborough Magistrates Court: “She finds herself in front of the court for the first time.

“When a relationship ended she returned from Hull to stay with her mother.

“However, that has not worked out and she had to leave when her mother told her she was no longer welcome.

“She has gone shopping and has foolishly taken the perfume.

“She was apprehended almost immediately and as soon as the store detective caught up with her she admitted taking it.

“She could not give a permanent address and was put in the cells.

“Her life is very much destabilised and it was a distressing time for her to spend a night in the police station.”

Magistrates gave Winter a six month conditional discharge for the theft.

She was also ordered to pay £85 costs.
