A MAN was left with serious back injuries after a sustained assault by a gang in Scarborough.

The 22-year-old man was attacked near to the corner of Queen Street and Castle Road between 4.50am and 5.30am on Saturday, December 31.

Police said he was walking towards the Scarborough Arms pub when he was approached by a number of men close to the steps leading to North Terrace car park.

He was punched to the head which caused him to fall to the floor where he was then kicked repeatedly in the back.

He was taken to Scarborough Hospital for treatment.

PC Gareth Evans from Scarborough Police said: “This was a shocking and cowardly attack which has left the victim very shaken and traumatised.

“There were a number of people who know what happened in the early hours of Saturday morning and I am appealing for them to search their conscience and report what they know to the police.

“I am also asking any passers-by who witnessed the assault or anyone else who knows who may be responsible to contact the police.”
