POLICE were called to a suspect package outside a Scarborough nightclub in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Former Green Howard infantryman Keith Poskill, who served for four years in Northern Ireland, called the police after he noticed a metal box outside Boleyn’s in St Thomas Street at 3:10am.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “On arrival the officer found a silver briefcase marked with a company’s contact details.

“The officer carried out an initial assessment and determined that there was nothing to suggest there was anything suspicious about the briefcase. They then confirmed that it was empty.

“If people are concerned about items they see in unusual circumstances we advise them to contact the police immediately.”

However, Mr Poskill, who remained at the scene, said he was dissatisfied with the police response.

“There were a lot of people in the club,” he said. “If it had been a device a lot of people would have been dead. The officer was nonchalant. It may seem trivial but it’s not. The area should have been cordoned off.”
