Police lockdown street during six-hour standoff

A man has been arrested after a dramatic six-hour police standoff in the middle of a Scarborough street.

Police negotiators were called in after reports that a man was hurling objects out of the window of his New Queen Street flat in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers arrived at around 2.20am and closed off the street as they tried to end the drama.

However, a tense standoff developed, with the force eventually bringing in specialist force negotiators to try and bring the suspect down.

Eventually, the man. who is understood to be in his early 30s, was arrested and is currently being interviewed by police.

The street, which police say was closed to protect the public, was reopened at approximately 8.30am this morning.
