Police are appealing for witnesses after a potentially “devastating” fire in Helmsley.

Fire crews and the police were called to Helmsley Spice, Bridge Street, on Wednesday at 1.30am after the front of the restaurant was set on fire.

Detectives now want to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident to get in touch.

Detective Constable Lucie Welford, of Malton CID, said: “Fortunately nobody was hurt in the incident, however if the fire and spread any further the impact could have been devastating.

“If you have any information that can help identify who is responsible, please contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”

Anyone who can help officers with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for DC Lucie Welford or Malton CID.

Alternatively, information can be emailed to lucie.welford@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
