By the time they arrived at the scene, in Lady Edith’s Drive, the youths, aged between 16 and 20, had disappeared.

Police are desperate to track down the members of the group.

Sgt Lucy McNeill, of Scarborough police, said yesterday: “The public should be left in no doubt as to how seriously we take reports of people carrying guns.

“We guess they had been up at Raincliffe Woods, but even if they were just messing about the sight of this group was very alarming to members of the public.

“We believe all five had air weapons of some sort in their possession.”

Police received the call at 4.50pm on Thursday. Four youths were dressed in camouflage clothing while the other was wearing a red T-shirt and a dark jacket.
