SCARBOROUGH Police have praised members of the public who stopped a suspected shoplifter in his tracks.
Officers were called to Sunset Wines on Victoria Road, at about 6.15pm on Wednesday, after a woman who was shopping in the store saw a man take a crate of beer and try to leave the shop.
The woman bravely stopped the man from leaving and held the door closed while she alerted members of staff.
She was joined by two friends who detained the suspect while staff and another member of the public called the police.
The suspect became abusive and threatened the people holding on to him.
When police arrived they arrested the 29-year-old Scarborough man on suspicion of theft.
PC Rebecca Lalor praised the actions of the woman and her friends and said: “These members of the public are to be commended for their public spirited actions. They put their own safety on the line in trying to detain the man. We would never recommend intervening in these situations, but have nothing but praise for their actions.”
