A former chairman of Barrowcliff Residents’ Association has been given an eight-month suspended prison sentence for theft.

Doug Kidd, of Barrowcliff Road, had previously admitted stealing £9,778 from the association’s funds over a two-year period.

Kidd’s sentence was suspended for two years and he was also ordered to carry out 75 hours of unpaid work.

At an earlier hearing the court heard that the money was taken between January 2010 and January this year following the death of his wife – although he said he had intended to pay it back.

The cash was to be used in the community and the theft was noticed following an audit.

Kidd had been the vice-chairman and then chairman of the association and had no previous convictions.

The association has been in Barrowcliff for three decades.
