ARMED police swooped on an elderly couple’s home in Scarborough after a teenager was found in their garage.

Sixteen officers and negotiators attended the bungalow in St Luke’s Crescent, off Scalby Road. The youth was shot with a taser electric gun. The Crescent was cordoned off by tape throughout the morning as police worked to resolve the incident.

The teenager, who is 17 and from Malton, cannot be named for legal reasons, but is believed to have armed himself with a pair of scissors and a saw from the garage.

The alarm was raised at 8am yesterday morning when the couple, both in their 80’s, awoke to find the stranger in their garage.

Police and ambulance crews then arrived on the scene, followed by negotiators after reports that the boy was threatening to harm himself.

After more than three hours the incident came to an end shortly after 11am.

Witnesses reported hearing shouting coming from the bungalow before two loud ‘zapping’ sounds.

At 11.04am the youth was carried out in a stretcher by paramedics before being taken to Scarborough Hospital via ambulance.

He had no serious injuries, and while at hospital was arrested on suspicion of affray. He was later released without charge.

The elderly couple were too shaken to speak after their ordeal.

One man, who lives behind the bungalow, but did not wish to be named said: “I have never seen anything like this around here before.

“I am just glad that the couple are ok. They are lovely people, but quite elderly, and this must have been a very frightening experience for them.”

Another neighbour said; “I just woke up this morning and opened my curtains at around 8.30am and saw all the police everywhere.

“I hadn’t heard anything through the night and had no idea what was going on.”
