A TEENAGER has admitted stealing a £2.24 bottle of beer from a Scarborough supermarket during the early hours of the morning.

Tobego Joel Motsepe, from Royal Avenue, was walking home at 3.50am on Saturday, May 21, when he decided to get another beer from the Westwood branch of Tesco.

Scarborough magistrates heard the 18-year-old was spotted by staff in the drinks isle carrying an opened bottle of Peroni lager.

Catherine Turnbull, prosecuting, said: “He said he opened it with his teeth and started to drink it but got caught before finishing it.”

Nick Tubbs, mitigating, said his client had fully complied with the police. He added: “He’d had a few to drink and wanted another on his way home. He offered to pay for the opened bottle.”

Motsepe was given a six-month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £2.24 in compensation and £85 in court costs.
