TWO women have been accused of running a brothel in Scarborough following a police raid.

Yan Na Cai and Lin Li, both 49, have been charged with managing the alleged house of ill repute, which it is claimed was situated at 11a Gladstone Road in Scarborough.

They appeared in court yesterday. Police officers raided the premises, which is between K and B Design and Aston Pharmacy, at 6.30pm on Sunday and made the arrests. It is a two-bed maisonette incorporating kitchen, living room and bathroom.

The women, who are originally from China and live in Queen Street, Scarborough, have also been charged with acquiring, using or possessing criminal property after approximately £1,200 was allegedly discovered at the property.

During the hearing at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Na Cai, who wore a red fleece, and Li, who wore a green cardigan with gold sequins, appeared in custody and opted to reserve their pleas to the charges. Magistrates directed that the case would be heard at York Crown Court and remanded the women in custody. The women will next appear at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday next week.

It is expected that the case will be sent to York Crown Court on March 5.

A 55 year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of permitting the use of a premises as a brothel.

He has been released on bail as police inquiries continue.
