New boy Matt Dempsey is expecting big things from Scarborough Athletic next season.
The uncompromising defender agreed terms with Boro boss Steve Kittrick earlier this week alongside another new recruit in midfielder Luke Dean.
Dean arrives from Conference North outfit Bradford Park Avenue, while Dempsey had been plying his trade with Boro’s Evo-Stik North rivals Hyde United.
“I’ve been following the progress of Scarborough for a while, it just struck me as an exciting place to be with the new facilities and the pre-season fixtures they have already put together,” said Dempsey.
“I spoke to the gaffer and I also spoke to Jamie Price, who I played with at Garforth, they both sold it to me.
“It was difficult leaving Hyde because it is a great club, I expect them to be right up there with Scarborough next season in what will be a tough promotion race.
“I know Luke (Dean) really well, he will be a great signing for the club, and after last season there is a great base for us to build on.
“Having finished the season so well I thought Scarborough should have got to the play-off final.
“That blip in the middle of the season cost the club the chance of competing at the top with Lancaster and Farsley.
“The next step for Scarborough has to be automatic promotion.”
Dempsey is now looking forward to getting going with the big Scarborough Sports Village opener against his former club Sheffield United.
He added: “I was at Sheffield United as a youngster, so playing in that game will be amazing.
“The fans at Hyde were brilliant at home and especially away.
“They took two coaches to every game, which really does give you that extra boost.
“I’ve heard good things about the Scarborough fans as well, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of them.”
Boss Kittrick added: “Luke has played in the Conference North for the past few seasons, he wants a new challenge and we have benefitted from that.
“Matt played against us and scored last season. He is another player who knows the league, knows the level and knows how to win you games of football.”
Boro have also confirmed the commitment of James Cadman, Matty Turnbull, Dave Merris and Jamie Price for the new campaign.
