SIXTY years of marriage is being celebrated by a Scarborough couple today.
George and Betty Raper are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary together at their home in Scalby Road.
The pair were married in 1951, at South Shields, where Mrs Raper is from.
She came to Scarborough at the age of 16 to work in the town’s hotels.
While in Scarborough she met local lad Mr Raper, and not long after the two became a couple.
After marrying Mr and Mrs Raper went on to have two children, Carol and Colin.
Mr Raper worked as a plumber for Appleby’s before going to work at Plaxton in Seamer Road, while Mrs Raper was a housekeeper for the Jackson family.
Their daughter Carol said: “Although they are both of ill health now, over the years they have always been there for their family, and always looked after us.
“We are a very close family, and are all very proud of them on their diamond anniversary.”
Mr Raper, 81, and Mrs Raper, 82, now have six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
They will be celebrating their anniversary with a family meal at the weekend.
