The thunder and lightning subsided and the rain stopped – so the only person working up a storm last night was Dionne Warwick.

It was a class opening to the season at the Open Air Theatre in Scarborough - a season which will see JLS and Olly Murs, among others, play the venue.

More than a 1,000 people attended Warwick’s concert and they were treated to a quality programme of all her hits - from re-workings of San Jose and Say A Little Prayer to Heartbreaker and Walk On By.

“She is fabulous,” said Jenny Burns of Coldyhill Lane, Scarborough. “It has been a fantastic show.”

Janet Deacon, of Welcome to Yorkshire, the organisation which promoted the show with Scarborough Council, said: “It is fantastic to have someone of Warwick’s calibre play Scarborough. She is an international star.”

Warwick, dressed in denim and a baseball cap, came on the stage at 8.30pm and delivered a 75-minute set of pure class.
