THE true story of the battle for clean water off the coast of Scarborough has been captured in a new book.

Chiropodist, radio presenter and author Charles White - AKA Dr Rock - held a book signing at Waterstone’s in Westborough to launch “The Adventures of the Sons of Neptune”.

The book tells of how the Scarborough marine conservation group fought and won a battle to stop raw sewage being pumped into the sea.

Charles said: “We managed to change the European laws and it was very hard work. All we wanted was for every man, woman and child to be able to go in the sea without fear of pollution.”

The book tells about the campaign and gives details of pivotal moments, such as when the Sons travelled to a scientific conference in the States and got confirmation that without treatment, the bugs in the sewage would become superbugs.

The book is on sale now.
