A friend of Andrew “Mo” Stevenson, who died of cancer in April, is set to tackle a gruelling 45-mile run in his memory.

Christian Machen, 33, and his friend John Hall, 34, of York, will run 45 miles over two days in the middle of July to raise money for a pair of cancer charities.

The duo will set off from York on July 27, running 17 miles to Malton, before undergoing a gruelling 28 mile jog the following day to Scarborough.

Mr Machen, of Lyell Street, is running for St Catherine’s Hospice, where 37-year-old Mo spent his final days.

He used to work at Klosters with Mo, and went to school with his two younger brothers, and he has vowed to do his late friend proud.

He said: “Mo was a fantastic friend and just a really good bloke. It was a big loss to the community, so I really wanted to do something for him.

“John’s running for York Against Cancer, as his mum sadly died from cancer a few years back, so we will hopefully make it to the end.”

They are now both undertaking a heavy training regime, spending hours on the treadmill up to four days a week.

They both completed a half-marathon for Sports Relief last year, and Mr Machen added: “We both have the miles in us, but we have never done anything like this before.

He added that he hopes to raise £2,000 for the charity, and he has already raised more than £200.
