YOUNGSTERS at a Scarborough nursery will be able to enjoy trips to the seaside after 12 members of staff passed a beach skills course.

They are based at Little Footsteps Nursery in Columbus Ravine and as well as the North and South Bays they are planning trips to other beaches in the area including Flamborough Head.

Bernadette Ireland, the nursery manager, said the trips were important for the children. She added: “We’ve got the local beaches on our doorstep and we wanted to utilise them as much as we could.”

She said the course included a wide range of issues including beach safety and planning visits around tide times. She said: “The children enjoy the beach immensely. We are getting more out of the time there rather than just taking buckets and spades.”

During their visits the children are able to recognise creatures living in rock pools as well as exercising their artistic talents by creating faces from seaweed on the sands. She said: “When they leave the beach they know that they have to leave it as they found it.”
