SCARBOROUGH may be waiting to find out if the 2012 Olympic Torch is coming to town but a group of sporting school children managed to get their hands on a past torch.

Pupils from Northstead School and Springhead School were invited to Yorkshire Coast College to take part in a Flames Festival, featuring the 1948 Olympic Torch.

The festival was part of a national initiative.

Ian McCombes, sports teacher at Yorkshire Coast College, said: “The Flames Festival is a fantastic end to several weeks work for our sports students at Yorkshire Coast College and also the pupils at Northstead Primary school and to have the actual 1948 London Olympic torch was an added bonus.

“The work that has been carried out in the sports department at the college to run these festivals and bring the 1948 Olympic torch to Scarborough reflects the commitment of the staff at the college to make lessons exciting and prepare our students for university or work when they finish.”
