A SCARBOROUGH pupil has branded his school “sexist” and “out of date” after being sent home for having his ears pierced.

Dan Lumley, 16, returned to Graham School on Monday after having both his ears pierced with stud earrings over the weekend.

However in his first lesson of the day Dan was told he either had to take the earrings out or go home as it is against school rules for boys to wear earrings.

Dan, who is due to take his GCSEs in a matter of weeks, chose to go home, believing the rules to be “sexist” and “unfair” to boys.

He said: “They told me to get out of lesson. I went to see the head of year and she said I either have to take them out or go home.

“I said I’ll go home then.

“I didn’t think ear piercing was against the school rules. Girls have their ears pierced.

“I know we can’t have hoops so I chose studs instead.

“If I honestly knew it was against the rules I wouldn’t have got it done. I have only got a few weeks left at school, I would have just waited until the summer.”

Dan said the school has told him the headteacher can’t speak to his father until Thursday, until which time Dan can’t return to school wearing the earrings.

Dan said: “I think it’s a bit ridiculous to do this so close to exams. There are more important things to be worrying about.”

Graham School headteacher Garry Hancock issued a statement saying: “The Graham School policy on uniform and jewellery is clear in our information for families.

“We apply the policy consistently and reasonably and we appreciate the fantastic support that we receive from families and students on uniform and appearance in general.”
