YOUNGSTERS from a Scarborough school whipped up some tasty treats to boost a Fairtrade drive.

The children from Northstead Primary School got to work in the kitchen to create scores of cakes to spread the message of Fairtrade Fortnight.

They also made board games and were given prizes for their best efforts.

Teacher Karen Wilson said the cake sales were the climax of a feast of activities, which had included talks from Scarborough’s Fairtrade group, Sainsbury’s and The Global Centre.

She added: “The whole idea was to raise their awareness of Fairtrade.

“They baked the cakes in the days leading up to the event and sold them with teas and coffees and also gave out leaflets to parents on what fairtrade is and how to support it.

“They were very busy and they loved taking on the roles of selling the cakes and serving the teas and coffees. After the event the children also took leaflets home with more fairtrade recipe ideas on.”

The children received prizes from the Co-operative for their hard work in promoting the cause.
