HAIR and beauty students at a Scarborough college will have the chance to show that they can cut it in the workplace with the opening of a state-of-the-art salon.
Pupils and staff from Yorkshire Coast College joined Scarborough Mayor Cllr Hazel Lynskey for the grand opening of the Aura hair and beauty salon this week.
They also enjoyed a fashion show from local degree students, with the models’ hair and make-up done by pupils at the college.
The state-of-the-art salon, which has been designed to replicate the standard found on the high street, has been built to simulate the workings of a professional shop.
The hope is that it will better prepare students for the jump between full-time education and the working world by equipping them with the skills they need to enter the industry.
Julie Moore, Head of School for Hair and Beauty, is thrilled with the new salon.
“It’s absolutely stunning, I just can’t believe how well it’s turned out,” she said.
“The aim for the design was to create an environment that inspires the students, which by putting them in a top class facility, brings out the best in them. That will undoubtedly happen.”
The salon offers a range of beauty treatments akin to anything in a professional shop.
Massages, facials and electrical treatments are just some of the procedures on offer at the college.
Customers will also be able to use cutting-edge technology, such as plasma tvs and iPads, during their pampering sessions.
The salon is already taking bookings and business is currently booming - something which Julie admits is essential in order for the students to develop their skills.
“There would be no point having state of the art facilities if nobody is using them. The only way the students are going to get real world experience is by working on clients.
“This has been built as a community facility and as such I would hope the community come and try it out, as at the end of the day, the salon is as good, if not better, than anything else out there.”
