Students speak out in competition

STUDENTS from a Scarborough college made themselves heard during a debating competition against counterparts from across Yorkshire.

The three students from Scarborough Sixth Form College – Laura Dixon, Jack Staple-Butler and Jake Moore – triumphed in the senior event of the Youth Speaks contest, beating teams from the Scarborough, Ryedale and Leeds for the title.

The trio, all in their first year at the college, gave the argument ‘Is there Democracy in the UK?’, with Laura chairing their debate at short notice and Jack and Jake successfully delivering the vote of thanks.

They will now go on to the regional finals at Hull University later this month.

They were coached by tutor Jenny Dodd for the competition, which is an annual event and is organised by Pickering Rotary Club.
