Scarborough’s university boss has remained tight lipped over his family links to convicted killer Oscar Pistorius.

Hull University Vice-chancellor Calie Pistorius is understood to be the third cousin of the athlete, who was this week convicted of shooting dead model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The South African academic, who is among the highest paid in Britain, has remained silent over the trial, with a Hull University spokesperson only confirming that Pistorius was “a distant relative” of the killer.

The Paralympian amputee - dubbed the ‘blade runner’ due to his prosthetic limbs - is facing a lengthy jail term after he was convicted of culpable homicide.

Professor Pistorius, who took over the role in 2009, pocketed a total in £321,000 last year - more than double the Prime Minister’s wage.

The uni chief has been at the helm of the University while courses have been scaled back at the Scarborough Campus.

His inflation-busting £45,000 pay hike last year was criticised by senior lecturers at his own university.

The University said the pay rise, which included bonuses, was his first in three years.

The athlete will be sentenced on October 13.

He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
