The first stages are being taken to prevent motorhomes from camping overnight on roadside parking in Scarborough.

Signs prohibiting motor caravans from parking between 11pm and 7am have been put up in Marine Drive this week.

The moves follows a decision by Scarborough Council’s Cabinet in October to prevent the popular practice of camper vans and mobile homes setting up camp overnight in car parking spaces.

The areas in Scarborough where the new regulations will apply are:

•Spa Drive and Forecourt

•Marine Drive

•West Pier

•King Street

•Eastborough

•Quay Street

Following approval from Cabinet the regulations were set to come in to force from Tuesday, January 1, 2013, however signs are already starting to appear under parking instructions.

Earlier this year temporary orders were put in place to prevent the practice in certain hot spots.

Cllr Penny Marsden, the portfolio holder for transport, said the proposal had travelled a “very difficult road” before it was presented to the Cabinet.

She said that it was expected that the new rules would result in some displacement of the mobile homes and the situation would be monitored by the council.
