Our daffodils could soon be joined by the Narcissus 'Scarborough'

THE spirit of Scarborough could eventually be springing up in parks and gardens everywhere thanks to a unique accolade bestowed on the town.

The Royal Horticultural Society has registered a new daffodil named after the town, Narcissus “Scarborough”.

The new daffodil has been developed over 10 years by breeder Ray Beckwith from Gateshead who judged Scarborough last year in the national finals of the society’s Britain in Bloom competition.

It is a lasting tribute to the Gold Medal Scarborough achieved in 2010.

The bulbs will be handed over to the Scarborough in Bloom group later this year.
