ONE of the Spa Orchestra’s biggest fans got an apt present when he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Eric Cooke was given a pass for the ensemble’s centenary season next year.

Among those who gathered at the Red Lea Hotel to wish Mr Cooke many happy returns were orchestra members Graham Quilter and Kathy Seabrook.

Mr Cooke was given a framed greeting from the band, signed by its 10 members.

He moved to Scarborough in 1984, having visited on many occasions to listen to the orchestra under Max Jaffa’s leadership.

Since then, he has been an avid follower.

He said: “Over the last year I have attended over 100 Spa Orchestra concerts and I think for a 10-piece, they play a great range of music.”
