BOSSES at Sainsburys yesterday welcomed a planned extension for its supermarket off Falsgrave Road.

Karen Lawton, a Scarborough Council planning officer, said it was first proposed in 2009 and the company had carried out an extensive public consultation process.

She said: “The feedback was that the idea of extending the store was welcome but the playpark should be left unaltered.”

The changes would increase the existing floorspace from the current 5,575sq metres to an area of more than 9,000sq metres.

More car parking spaces will be created as well as a new service road.

A Sainsburys spokesman said the shop had not been developed since they acquired it in 2004 and feedback had been positive.
