THE FIRE service remained at the scene of a gorse fire near Cayton Bay for three hours on Sunday.
Crews had initially been called to the scene, close to the Crows Nest campsite, on Saturday night after receiving several phone calls from members of the public.
When firefighters reached the scene at shortly after 11pm, 500 square metres of gorse was alight.
The fire continued to flare up on Sunday, and two fire engines from Scarborough were forced to remain at the scene for three hours.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said yesterday that the fire had eventually been dealt with, and rain had assisted in firefighters’ efforts.
The spokesperson added that the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
