COMPETITORS travelled from across the country, making a blooming marvellous effort in a local annual flower show.

The Yorkshire Pelargonium and Geranium Society show held at Scalby Parish Hall may not have attracted as many numbers than in previous years, but was said to rival to its national counterpart.

Joan Ward, who helped to run a tombola and raffle stall at the event said: “We had a lot a lot of comments from people who went to the national show at Leeds last week and we were told it was better than theirs.

“There were 23 competitors, the standards have been extremely high. People came from Hartlepool, Suffolk, Scotland and Wales, we did have some new faces from Wakefield as well.”

Trophies at the show were presented by Penelope Dawson-Brown.
