A SCARBOROUGH soldier has just completed his full military training as a Scimitar armoured reconnaisance crewman and is serving with the Light Dragoons.
Trooper Sam Pickard, who is from the Peasholm area of the town, had to complete 14 weeks of rigorous training at the Army Training Regiment in Bassingbourne.
An Army spokesman said: “After his passing out parade he then moved on to Bovington in Dorset where his training became more mentally demanding.
“He passed his five month training which included a car-driving test and then specialization in the areas of communications and driving and maintaining armoured fighting vehicles. He is now a qualified driver of a Scimitar tank.”
He added that the former Graham School pupil, and Yorkshire Coast College student, had completed the full cycle – from pursuing his studies to enquiring about, and eventually serving with, the armed forces.
Tpr Pickard will be at the Army Careers Information Office in Northway from Monday until Friday to talk to anyone who interested in following in his footsteps.
The spokesman said: “He will be able to give an honest insight into life of a crewman in the Army today.”
