THE operator of Scarborough’s Futurist theatre has voiced his support for Engelbert Humperdinck who performed at the venue and has now been named Britain’s Eurovision Song Contest entrant.
Barry Stead was not at the Futurist when Engelbert performed in the South Bay theatre, but says the 75-year-old star has performed in shows for him at other theatres across the country.
Engelbert, best known for 1967’s Release Me, was yesterday named as the artist who will represent the UK in this year’s contest.
Mr Stead said: “I am really pleased for him as he is such a nice guy.
“Whatever he has to sing, he will be the right man to sing it. He has got quite a task though competing against the youngsters.”
