Three Scarborough residents are holding a charity ball in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
It is the idea of Mel D’Eath and two of her friends and part of their bid to raise £9,000 for the charity.
“Supporting the Alzheimer’s Society is very important to me,” said Mel.
“My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s seven years ago aged 58, now 65 he is reliant on nursing staff for all his needs, there is no eye contact, no conversation, nothing.” For the past two years, he has been cared for in Springwood hospital, Malton.
Mel, Marie Marshall and Matt Young have also taken up the challenge to trek a 50-mile stretch of the Great Wall of China.
“This is my second challenge for the Alzheimer’s Society. I previously raised more than £3,000 climbing Ben Nevis,” said Mel.
Marie and Matt have been friends with Mel and her family for many years and have seen the heartbreak the disease can cause.
Marie said: ‘When Mel said she was doing this challenge we just couldn’t sit back, we knew we had to support her.”
