Students at Yorkshire Coast College went head-to-head in a battle of artistry and expertise in their annual Aura Hair and Beauty competition.

The event at Scarborough Rugby Club saw students studying Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at levels one to three compete in categories such as Classical 1950s Make-up, Ladies’ Avant Garde Hair and Make-up and Ladies’ Formal Evening Style.

Categories such as body painting to the theme of “Artists”, Ladies Fantasy Hair, face painting to the theme of “Animals” and a freestyle competition to the theme of 1980s Pop allowed students to run wild with their creativity.

Tutor Debbie Day said: “Staff and students thoroughly look forward to our annual Aura Hair and Beauty competition.

“Our learners worked tirelessly in preparation and the results were visually stunning.”

The competition was judged by Alison Hodgson, Tracey Maw, Jodie Brown, Carol McNally and Kim Johnson.

Winners of the competition were: Ladies’ Avant Garde Hair – Lauren Wright; Ladies’ Fantasy Hair – Jessica Teesdale; Ladies’ Evening Hair – Caron Matthews; Freestyle Hair to the theme of 80s Pop – Caron Matthews; Ladies’ Avant Garde Make Up – Karolina Oazak; 1950s Make Up – Diane Fenton; Body Painting – Jade Welburn and Face Painting – Ning Procter.

The winners will now go on to represent Yorkshire Coast College at the regional and national Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competition in Gateshead and Blackpool in March.

The competition was sponsored by Dermalogica UK, Wella Professional Hair Care, Dennis Williams, Scarborough Rugby Club and local wedding and event hire business, Chocolate and Pink.
