MAJOR work will begin next month to revamp the main reception area and exterior entrance at Scarborough Hospital.

This £565,000 refurbishment has been made possible thanks to a £200,000 donation from the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) and £250,000 of funding from Scarborough health trust’s charitable funds.

Over £100,000 has also been made available through the trust’s Capital Plan for 2010/11 and 2011/12 to improve the patient environment.

James Hayward, director of facilities, said: “We are delighted to be able to commence work on this project. The enabling work has already been tendered, and following go ahead from the board to proceed to the tender stage, work can now get underway.

“The main gateway to the hospital will undergo a complete refurbishment. The interior area will be opened up making it lighter and more airy – proving a better experience and first impression for patients, staff and visitors.

“A new layout will help improve patient flow whilst improved facilities will include a coffee shop, baby changing facilities and toilets, seating areas and a new reception office.

“The coffee shop will be run by the WRVS and the existing WRVS shop will also be extended as part of the plans.”

He added: “We are very grateful for the contribution made by the WRVS and look forward to working in partnership with them over the coming months and years to provide a welcoming environment for our patients, visitors and staff.”

Sue Collins, WRVS head of the Yorkshire and Humber region, said: “WRVS is delighted to be able to contribute to these exciting refurbishments and to be involved in the new facilities which will further demonstrate the hard work of our dedicated staff and volunteers.”

The refurbishment is due to be completed by early September.

During the major building work, visitors will enter the hospital via the West Wing entrance. The WRVS shop will also be relocated to this area during this time.

A cash machine (ATM) will be installed near the main reception at Scarborough Hospital in early June.

The machine will initially be located adjacent to the vending machines, opposite the lifts near reception.

However once the refurbishment of the main reception is completed it will be relocated to this area.
