A SCARBOROUGH support group has celebrated its first birthday – and is hoping to help even more people in the local area.

Al-Anon, which offers help and support to the families and friends of problem drinkers, started its Monday group in July 2010.

The group meets at Westborough Church every Monday from 7.30pm to 9pm. It is a relaxed and informal gathering which is free of charge, though a pot is passed around for voluntary contributions.

Everything said in the meetings is strictly confidential, so people can share their concerns safe in the knowledge that their anonymity will be respected.

To celebrate its one-year milestone the group invited Al-Anon members from Hull, Whitby and Bridlington to join them for a social evening.

A spokeswoman said: “The evening was a huge success. A total of £185 was raised which will help to maintain the financial stability of the Monday meeting and also the London office, which provides support and literature to all the groups in the UK.”

There is also a meeting at Westborough Church every Thursday from 7.30pm to 9pm.
