A DATE has set for Scarborough’s Race for Life 2011 - and the event has a new seaside venue.

The popular event, which has been held at Oliver’s Mount since 2005, will be held on Sunday May 8 in North Bay, starting and finishing at the Sea Life Centre.

The 5K women-only race in aid of Cancer Research UK was a huge success last year with 1,516 participants raising over £67,000 to help fund the charity’s lifesaving work.

Organisers say the new venue will allow over more than 4,000 people to take part - almost double the capacity of previous years.

It is hoped the move will allow more people to come along and support the event by taking part, volunteering and cheering on their friends and family.

Race for Life has been working closely with Scarborough Council to make arrangements for the event. More details about the exact route will be released shortly.

Claire Wase, Race for Life event manager for Scarborough, said: “We are asking Scarborough women to mark Sunday 8 May, 2011, in their diaries and invite their mums, daughters, sisters, friends and colleagues to take part with them.

“Race for Life has an unforgettable atmosphere with local women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness abilities coming together to make a positive difference to the lives of people touched by cancer.

“They motivate and inspire each other to complete the 5K, with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.

“It is going to be even more exciting bringing Race for Life to the beautiful Scarborough seafront, giving it an extra special quality for those taking part.

“The website opens for entries on Monday January 17, but it’s really important that local women ring the date in their calendars now and make a note that the venue is different to last year.”

One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives. However more people are beating the disease than ever before and Cancer Research UK’s work is at the heart of that progress.
