A major diabetes awareness event featuring cookery demonstrations and free health advice is set to take place at Scarborough’s Spa Complex.
The event has been organised by the Diabetes Specialist Team in Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale to coincide with World Diabetes Day on Thursday November 14.
It will be held in the Ocean Room from 9.30am to 2.30pm and is free and open to all.
The event, called “Increase your awareness of diabetes”, will feature information stands, a programme of speakers and exercise and cookery demonstrations.
Speakers include Richard Lane OBE, the president of Diabetes UK and Patrick Crowley, chief executive of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Diabetes services co-ordinator Helen Hinchliffe, who is organising the event, said: “The aim of the event is to raise awareness of diabetes to the population of Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale and York and Selby.
“We would like to give people the opportunity to learn more about diabetes and its prevention, with a focus on healthy eating and increasing exercise.
“Our target audience will be people with diabetes, families, carers of people with diabetes and the general public.”
Helen added: “We would like to encourage people to visit this event to learn more about the prevention of diabetes and other long-term conditions.
“We hope this event will increase people’s awareness and knowledge of diabetes and how to live a healthy life with diabetes.”
During the day, there will be live cooking demonstrations by Rob Porter, the owner of the Green Room Restaurant in Scarborough and exercise demonstrations by Martin Russell, suite supervisor at Scarborough Sports Centre.
Information stands include the local Diabetes UK Voluntary Group, the Proudfoot Group, Change4life, Community Dietitians and Podiatrists, Diabetes Retinal Screening service and Adult and Paediatric Specialist Diabetes Teams, pharmaceutical device companies and many other NHS specialist services.
There will also be local fitness centres including Crown Spa Fitness Centre, Eze Fitness Centre, Compass Health and Fitness, Barons Health and Fitness Club and Plaxton Court Leisure Facilities also Richardsons Cycling Club and Let’s Bike cycling company. Local slimming groups will be represented by Slimming World and Weightwatchers, who aim to encourage the public to eat healthier and do more exercise.
