Riley zoomed into the charts taking the crown from Oliver which this year dropped out of Scarborough’s most popular birth name for boys while Isla fell from the girls’ listing after occupying the top spot in 2010.

Dublin’s unofficial anthem which tells the tale of the ‘sweet Molly Malone’ might have inspired the new favourite girls’ name of 2011, resulting ahead of Sophie which moved up one place in the local rankings after coming joint third with Jessica last year.

While traditional names are still proving popular – boys’ names such as George and Edward entered Scarborough’s male top 10 this year – there were also a crop of more unusual baby names.

The lovely Valentina might turn heads with her Italian namesake alongside others including Marius, Oaklea and Elki.

Double-barrelled baby names were also more common this year with Evie-Rose, Tayla-Rai and Jamie-Leigh representing the girls.
