Scarborough’s much-loved Peasholm Park has been named 6th best park in the UK and 25th best in the whole of Europe.
The ratings, published by online review site Trip Advisor, have placed Peasholm Park higher than Richmond Park, London (7th), Hampstead Heath, London (8th), Windsor Great Park, Berkshire (9th) and Kensington Gardens, London (10th).
It was pipped to the number one spot by St James’ Park, London, and was also beaten by Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh (2nd), Hyde Park, London (3rd), Holyrood Park, Edinburgh (4th) and Regent’s Park, London (5th).
Linda Harper, chairman of Peasholm Park Friends, told The Scarborough News she was delighted - but not surprised - that Peasholm Park was so high in the ratings.
She said: “I think the park deserves to be where it is in the list. There are so many people in Scarborough who don’t realise what a gem we’ve got on our doorstep.
“It’s wonderful and a great accolade for Scarborough. I hope it encourages more people from far and wide, as well as locally, to come and visit.”
Mrs Harper said she found it particularly exciting that the park had been named 25th best in Europe, adding: “There are so many beautiful parks in Europe, especially in France. To be so high up the list is amazing.”
The park has been welcoming visitors for more than 100 years and is known an loved by people all over the world.
The Friends group has received many messages over the years from people who wish to share their love and affection for the park.
Mrs Harper said: “It’s so nice that people enjoy it. A lot of work goes into the park by volunteers and the council to keep it looking so good.”
• The park will soon be hosting a Knit and Natter event from 11am to 2pm on July 28.
