SCARBOROUGH actress Joanne Frogatte’s storyline in Downton Abbey helped take the drama to the top of the festive ratings.
The Christmas Day episode was the most watched programme – beating EastEnders which was initially named top programme.
Downton – including the love-murder trial plot in which Joanne’s character Anna is devastated when her new husband, played by Brendan Coyle, is convicted of killing his first wife – pulled in 11.59 million viewers, compared to EastEnders’ 11.33 million. The final total varies because it includes HD viewers, and those who recorded shows to watch later.
The confirmed figures show the BBC’s Doctor Who came third, with 10.77 million viewers, while ITV1’s Coronation Street was behind with 10.56 million.
Downton Abbey has been nominated for best drama at the National Television Awards, alongside Doctor Who, Waterloo Road and Merlin.
