JUNIOR REPORT: Busy times for our youngsters

The rugby club was again a hive of activity on Sunday morning even with half the mini section and a portion of the junior teams playing away.

I’m not so sure if this had anything to do with the national team’s performance on Saturday, but there were plenty of England jerseys on display....I for one enjoyed seeing them get covered in the Silver Royd mud.

The minis were split at the weekend with the younger teams training at home and the older minis travelling to Redcar for a fixture.

Walking around watching the individual sessions taking place on the lower pitches was a pleasure on Sunday morning with the sun shining and every child enjoying their games and activities with their coaches.

Also hearing reports from Redcar was pleasing with each team putting on good performances and enjoying their rugby which at this young age is without doubt the priority.

The only junior game to go ahead at Silver Royd on Sunday was the Under-13s team, who were up against local rivals Malton.

Missing a few players at the weekend was a struggle for the home side and Malton capitalised with some strong running and hard-hitting defence.

This was a real eye-opener for our young boys but hopefully will be a good lesson learnt for the future.

Some positives to come out though where the second half performances of most of the lads especially in defence and their workrate to never give up.

Away from home the Under-16s had a trip to Driffield and the Colts had a league fixture away at Selby.

The Under-16s travelled with just short of 15 players due to injuries and some late call offs but they stuck to their task exceptionally well and had an exciting game much to the pleasure of all the travelling coaches and supporters.

The Colts had a tough game at Selby and came out on the wrong side of a narrow 24-12 defeat.

Although the boys stuck in well coach Colin Davies rued a lack of support for the ball carrier and the ability to react quickly to different situations.

This team isn’t too far from being a real good outfit they just need to continue to apply themselves and work hard for each other.

Hopefully the added help from senior boys around the club will help to change the fortunes and the results for these youngsters.
