A young woman has been airlifted to hospital following a serious car crash which has closed off a busy Scarborough road.
Police remain at the scene of the wreckage on the A165 between Filey and Reighton following the collision near the entrance of Lowfield Caravan Park at around 1.50pm today.
The crash involved a blue Citroen Saxo, heading towards Filey, and a silver Vauxhall Zafira travelling in the opposite direction.
A 23-year-old local woman, who was driving the Saxo, was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with serious leg injuries. The extent of the injuries is not yet known.
The man driving the Zafira, a woman who was a front seat passenger and four children were taken to Scarborough Hospital by road ambulance. They are believed to have suffered minor injuries, which are not life-threatening.
Eye-witnesses said the smash appeared to be a head-on collision.
The road has been closed in both directions while police examine the scene, with traffic being diverted through Hunmanby.
Traffic Sergeant Pete Wood, of Scarborough Roads Policing Group, said: “If you witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles prior to the incident, I urge you to come forward and contact the police as soon as possible.”
