The late Sir Jimmy Savile, who had a holiday home in Scarborough, and is now at the centre of child sex abuse allegations.

Plans for a Scarborough statue of Sir Jimmy Savile to recognise his charity endeavours have been dropped.

The action follows a wave of allegations about his conduct with under-age girls.

A spokesman for The Scarborough Sir Jimmy Memorial Group said: “The idea of a memorial followed the outpouring of national and local public affection for Sir Jimmy and was inspired by the best of intentions.

“But the idea was shelved in the light of the accusations and the sensitivity of the issues raised.”

The Civic Society gilt-plaque installed the wall of Sir Jimmy’s apartment last month has been removed after it was vandalised.
