TAILBACKS plagued Marine Drive as the first weekend of traffic lights and one-way driving came in to force.
The roadworks cover a 300-metre section of seafront road from the Toll House to just past the pumping station buildings.
They are part of a two-year, £40 million project by Yorkshire Water to improve bathing water at the town’s beaches.
The utility firm is installing an underground storm storage tank at the Toll House Pumping Station.
Last week traffic lights were installed to control traffic flow as the road was reduced to one lane.
At weekends, and during school holidays, the road will then become entirely one way with traffic only travelling from south to north.
Over the weekend the lights remained in place throughout Saturday and Sunday to control traffic in both directions.
One of those caught up in the works was Dave Jones, senior inspector at bus operator EYMS group. On Saturday he said: “The situation on Marine Drive is that the traffic lights are in operation. The roundabout was installed last night but removed this morning due to either ‘head-ons’ or near misses last night so we are down to one lane governed by the lights. However there is no work taking place on site, nor is there any workers on site.
“I have to ask the question do we really need the lights this weekend?”
The roadworks formed a double blow to the seafront which had also been hit with faults in phone lines.
Phones and internet were down on Friday and Saturday throughout the old town and Sandside.
The fault is believed to have been caused by a flooded junction box resulting from heavy downpours late last week.
Residents and businesses were hit hard, with some shops unable to use credit card machines, and restaurants missing out on table bookings over the phone.
BT engineers were working over the weekend to resolve the issue.
